The key difference between ferrous and non-ferrous metals lies in their iron content. Ferrous metals contain iron, whereas non-ferrous metals do not. This distinction impacts their properties and applications. Ferrous metals, such as steel and cast iron, possess magnetic properties, are generally stronger and more durable, and are commonly used in construction, automotive, and manufacturing industries.
Non-ferrous metals, including aluminium, copper, brass, and titanium, offer advantages such as corrosion resistance, lighter weight, and better electrical conductivity. They are widely used in aerospace, electrical, and architectural applications, as well as in industries where non-magnetic properties and high resistance to corrosion are required.
The simplest way to find out is with a magnet. If the metal attracts the magnet, it is ferrous, if it does not, it is non-ferrous.

Most common metals, in all their forms be can be recycled, such as aluminium cans, copper wiring, steel rebars, brass fixtures and stainless-steel kitchenware. However, there are exemptions and some metals need to be handled with care. Lead, for example, is a toxic metal that can cause health problems if not properly recycled.
